REFLECTING ON LEADERSHIP

Throughout my semester-long journey as a leader, various assignments have sculpted my abilities and transformed my approach to collaboration, communication, and being a leader. One pivotal moment was preparing for the in-class team debate, where the dynamics of working with diverse strengths and weaknesses helped our overall performance in class. Beforehand, we split the tasks (researching and speaking) equally to collaborate and fully support our stance. Clashing ideas prompted a deep introspection into my abilities and a greater appreciation for the unique contributions each team member brought to the table. Hearing different perspectives in the team allowed me to recognize the importance of adapting my leadership style to accommodate the strengths of others while addressing weaknesses constructively. This experience refined my ability to assess and leverage individual capabilities by heightening my awareness of the intricate interplay of personalities in a collaborative setting. Moreover, learning in-depth about a topic imbued me with the confidence to articulate my thoughts during the in class debate. While I do not struggle with public speaking, this was my first debate, so my nerves were through the roof. However, my fear lessened after I read academic articles about genre and felt empowered to believe that I actually can communicate ideas clearly and persuasively.

Weekly discussion posts were essential for honing my ability to evaluate topics from various perspectives. They enriched my understanding of authors like Okubo or Menchu and fostered a more nuanced approach to analysis within me. Engaging with differing opinions sharpened my critical thinking skills and enhanced my capacity to construct well-reasoned arguments. Similarly, Mari's presentations on the fundamentals also improved my writing. These segments of class added to my understanding of constructing compelling arguments and presenting them cohesively. Mari's insights, coupled with assignments, elevated my written work, providing me a solid foundation for effective leadership.

The journey towards becoming a better leader extended into the digital realm as I undertook the challenge of creating a Wix.com website and creating a podcast. They expanded my digital literacy by navigating new online platforms for effective communication. Embracing technology as a tool for leadership, I discovered new ways to reach and engage with diverse audiences, along with how to properly give credit to online sources through the trip to the CDVL.

Reflecting on these diverse experiences, it is obvious that LDR 101 has greatly contributed to my growth as a leader. The ability to analyze and leverage diverse strengths and weaknesses, articulate ideas with confidence, evaluate topics from different perspectives, construct compelling arguments, and navigate the digital landscape—all these skills collectively form the bedrock of effective leadership.

In conclusion, this semester has equipped me with the versatile skill set essential for navigating the complex landscape of leadership. From understanding the dynamics of teamwork to refining my public speaking and writing skills, each challenge and triumph has left an indelible mark on my leadership style. The combination of these experiences has not only made me a more adept and resilient leader but also instilled in me the belief that continuous learning and adaptability will be the cornerstones of effective leadership throughout my life.
